Why Walking, Yoga & Pilates Aren’t Enough After 40

I walk daily. I love Mat Pilates. Yoga is powerful.

But there’s one thing I do before all of them:

I strength train—three times a week, every week.
And I intend to keep doing it for the rest of my life.

Here’s why:

After you turn 30, your muscles will lose mass.

After the age of 40, your bones will lose density.

Both of these statements are true for everyone if you do nothing.

Lifestyle, genetics, and activity level will play a role.

But one thing has the power to change the trajectory:

Strength training.

Take your pick or a combination of bodyweight, resistance bands, dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells, or machines.

But train:

Not once in a while. Not just when you feel inspired.
But consistently—two to three times a week—for the rest of your life.

The Gift that Keeps on Giving

The benefits of strength training are not restricted to building muscle and bone.

1.    Revs up your metabolism (hello, fat loss)

2.    Improves mobility and joint function

3.    Sharpens your focus

4.    Shapes your body

5.    Helps you move better and do life better

6.    Improves sleep

7.    Boosts confidence

8.    Builds stamina

9.    Improves posture

10. Prevents falls and injuries

11. Supports heart health

12. Helps you stay mentally and emotionally strong

Train for the Life You Want to Live

Think about what brings you joy.

Then think about what you’ve stopped doing—or have never done—because of pain, fatigue, or fear of injury.

Now picture the future version of you.

How long do you want to stay independent? Mobile? Free?

Strength training helps you:

·       To lift your grandkids without strain

·       To play better golf or tennis

·       To hike farther with less fatigue

·       To travel with ease, not stiffness

·       To lose stubborn weight

·       To build muscle and regain tone

·       To improve bone density and fight osteoporosis

·       To sleep deeply and wake refreshed

·       To stabilize your mood

·       To reduce chronic pain

·       To prevent falls

·       To keep your independence

·       To garden, dance, cook, move, live

You Have More Power Than You Think

Aging isn’t something that just happens to you.
You have more control than you’ve been told.

How you age is shaped by what you do.
And strength training is the most powerful action you can take.
